David's California
AIDS Ride 5

I was rider 2882 in the California AIDS Ride 5 held May 31 through June 6, 1998.  It was a fun and exciting adventure and I am presenting it here for you to enjoy.

The purpose of the ride was to spotlight HIV and AIDS and keep awareness alive. This year the AIDS Ride 5 campaign had 2600 cyclists and over $9.5M in contributions.  Every rider was required to raise $2500 prior to the ride to qualify.

(1) On Day 0 we waited in lots of lines: registering, assigning tent-mates, and taking a safety course. (112K)

(2) Ben & Jerry Ice Cream was a hit at registration. (124K)

(3) They stored our bikes in a warehouse overnight in Fort Mason between Day 0 (registration) and riding Day 1. (176K)

(4) On Day 1 I get my bike out of storage at 8:30AM and I'm ready to ride. Cindy calls my bike the "recum-Bentley" because it looks too comfortable. (128K)

(5) San Andreas Lake and our second "pit stop" out of San Francisco on Day 1. (128K)

(6) Pigeon Point lighthouse was only one of the scenic sites that first day. (104K)

(7) Me and my tentmate Chris after a long day of riding. (124K)

(8) Riders happy to come into camp after a long day. The rest of us cheer them in. (132K)
