One last family hug before I go.

I have done the AIDS Lifecycle so many times that it felt comfortable and familiar from the start. My body was ready and my bike was tuned up.

A fairing bolt broke as I assembled my bike at the Cow Palace. Not a big deal. I fixed it with a temporary twist tie. Later that day, my recumbent friend Kelley gave me one of her extra bolts. My bike was set and ready to go.

On Day 6 we got caught in a monumental rainstorm which caused a horrible car accident on Route 101 outside Lompoc. No cyclist was involved, but the accident closed the road and stopped the ride for the first time ever in its sixteen year history. It was a logistical nightmare. All 2,100 cyclists had to be bussed to Ventura which took all day. The mid-day lunch stop had to move the food to both our starting and ending locations to feed us all. Our bikes had to be packed up and carried in gear trucks, some of which did not arrive in Ventura until after midnight. Check the Rain Out page for more information and pictures.
